1 General Introduction of Bridge English Summer Class
The Bridge English Summer Class is for students in Sino-US Colorado Class or who want to study overseas in Colorado Technical University. The object of the Class is to make students achieve Level 3 of Bridge English ( equal to IELTS 5-5.5), which meets CTU undergraduate admission requirement. The Class begins in July of 2010 with 252 lessons in total.
There are two major courses. One is Comprehensive English Course and the other is Grammar and Writing Course. The teaching materials for Comprehensive English Course are Top Notch 3 (Joan Saslow & Allen Ascher), Top Notch 3 ---Student Workbook and Vocabulary Box; The teaching materials for Grammar and Writing Course are Clear Grammar2 (Keith S. Folse), Clear Grammar2-- -Student Workbook, Basic Composition for ESL (3rd Ed.) and Vocabulary Box. The Comprehensive English Course is taught by Zhang Lei and Wu Kan and Grammar and Writing Course is taught by Ke Huanhuan and Feng Chunchan. Those teachers have their own specific teaching plans ( in file covers).
2 Teaching Requirements
(1) Comprehensive English Course:
Students will demonstrate their mastery, in all four skill areas, of various functional English skills, including but not limited to the topics of:
Cultural literacy
Health matters
Getting things done(business and non-business services)
Life choices (work and study options , skills and abilities)
Holidays and traditions
Disasters and emergencies
Books and magazines
Inventions and technology
Controversial issues (politics and social issues), and Enjoying the world (nature, geography, etc.)

Students will demonstrate understanding and accurate use of vocabulary and grammar structures, including but not limited to:
Tag questions: form and social use
Past perfect tense : form and use
Modal verbs of possibility, conclusions and ability (may, might, must etc.),
The passive causative
Causatives with get , have and make
“Future in the past ” forms (was/were going to, would, etc)
Perfect modals :form and use
Adjective clauses with subject relative pronouns
Indirect speech using say, tell and tense changes
Noun clauses with imbedded questions
Noun clauses as direct objects
Conditional sentence review
Unreal conditional sentences : form and use
Non-count nouns for abstract ideas
Verbs followed by objects and infinitives
Infinitives with too +adjective and
Prepositions of place to describe locations.

Finally, students will demonstrate understanding and accurate use of writing mechanics, including but not limited to:
Spelling rules and patterns
Capitalization rules
Basic sentence and question forms (including subject-verb agreement) and
Punctuation rules

(2) Grammar and Writing Course:
Students will demonstrate understanding and accurate use of vocabulary and grammar structures, including but not limited to:
Articles;
Be going to +verb
Irregular past tense
How questions
Adverbs of frequency
Object pronouns
One and other
Possessives
Comparative and superlative adjectives
Modal verbs
Common problem words (and how to correct them)

Contextualized writing practice will include practice at both the sentence and paragraph level, including but not limited to:
Simple sentence structures
Compound sentence structure
Paragraph format and organization
Identification and creation of topic sentences
Identification and creation of supporting sentences
Identification and creation of detail sentences, and
Identification and creation of concluding sentences.

3 Assessment Criteria of the Course
The final mark consists of Course mark(30%), the final written test(35%) and the final oral test(35%). The full mark is 100. The following table is about how to assess the Course mark.

STUDENTS’ answer sheets of the final written test( Placement Test Form B) are contained in file covers.
The test paper for students’ oral test is also contained in file covers. The final oral test is given by Professor Wu Guoliang and the four teachers.
