With nearly 30 years of teaching experience gained from community needs, the College of English aims for a higher level of teaching pedagogies. This gives rise to the emphasis on nurturing talented individuals, who, upon graduation, will receive a high level of English language skills, and a comprehensive understanding of Professional practice.
The college has established four majors, namely English, Applied English, Tourism English and English Education, and two research institutes, the International Centre of Cross-cultural Comparative Studies and the Australian Research Institute. Presently the College has over 2,900 full-time students, with 103 teachers who have a balanced structure in age, degree and title. The College has excellent scientific research facilities. The teachers have rich teaching experience and comprehensive qualities. Among the teachers, 32% or above are associate professor (including 1 doctoral supervisor and 2 graduate supervisors), 55% are teachers of Master Degree, and 20% are foreign teachers. The college has gained a Zhejiang provincial key major in Applied English, Shaoxing Municipal key major in English Education, a Zhejiang Provincial excellent course in Integrated English and Shaoxing Municipal Excellent course in English Grammar. The Basic English and English Grammar are both programmed as the first Undergraduate Excellent Courses of the University. The College also provides the University Undergraduates with a Special major in English.
In the past 3 years, the teachers of the college have contributed 15 academic books, teaching materials and teaching references published. Also over 200 academic theses have been published in all kinds of academic journals. The College has gained a State project for Experiencing English Translation Theory & Practice by the State Social Science Fund, six Provincial and Municipal research projects and eight University-level key programs.
Over the past two or three years, students of the college have served as volunteers for various projects, such as the China International Textile Expo, the Thirteenth Session of China International Chemical Fiber Conference, the 2007 International (Shaoxing) Wetland Forum, and the Fourteenth Session of Shanghai International Garment Textile Trade Fair. The students who volunteered for the projects have gained a comprehensive understanding of their abilities as English translators and working professionals.
This has contributed to many English related prizes, such as the CCTV Star of Outlook English Talent Competition (Zhejiang zone), the Zhejiang College Student’s Oral English contest, the New Concept English Contest, the Shaoxing College Student’s Oral English Contest and many others.
