Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages is registered by the Ministry of Education of PRC as a full-time University.
Located in Shaoxing, a well-known historical and cultural city in China, the University stems from Shaoxing Yuexiu Foreign Languages School, which was established in 1981 by Shaoxing’s famous educator Mr. Shao Hongshu, the nephew of Mr. Shao Lizi ( a renowned figure in China’s history and honored as a Peace Senior). The first Headmaster of the school was Mr. Wei Fengjiang, the sole Chinese student of the world-famous Indian poet Tagore.
In 1999, the school began to make preparations for its upgrade into a vocational college, and in May 2001, under the approval of People’s Government of Zhejiang, it was officially renamed as Shaoxing Yuexiu Foreign Languages College of Vocational Education.
In April, 2008, it was upgraded to a full-time general University under the approval of the Ministry of Education, and was officially renamed as Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages.
Along the way, the University has been honored with such titles as, Zhejiang Provincial Model Law-managing University, Zhejiang Provincial Outstanding University with High Graduate Employment Rate, Zhejiang Provincial University of Peaceful Campus, Zhejiang Provincial Unity of Security-innovating University Campus, and Zhejiang Provincial Demonstrating “Party Members’ Family”.
The University aims to provide a unique educational feature by understanding social needs, advocating the construction and the optimization of talent cultivation, cultivating practical foreign language talents, and qualifying graduates in foreign business management by providing them with both foreign language competence and vocational competence.
The SPT (Successful, Practical, Talents) concept has become fully systematised and established in Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages. It clearly demonstrates its cultivation objective and norm, namely, with “Successful Practical Foreign Language Talent” as its objective, and “the three core abilities” (the abilities of foreign language application, job skills and comprehensive application), and “the four certificates” (the certificates of diploma, foreign languages tests, the vocational qualification and common skill) as its norm.
The University has implemented the special teaching mode of “Foreign Language Majored + Specialty + Comprehensive Quality and of Specialty Majored + Foreign Language + Comprehensive Quality”. The unique SPT system has proven to be very successful, and has been fully approved by the Ministry of Education of PRC.
Covering a total area of 500 mu, and with a floor space of 210,000 square meters, the University was recently authorized by the Shaoxing Municipal Government to purchase another 535 mu in Jinghu New District of Shaoxing as its second campus (the new campus is currently under construction).
Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages has modern teaching buildings, a library holding 890,000 books, an indoor stadium, sports grounds, and 27 vocational training bases on campus.
The University is equipped with an advanced language teaching system made up by 12 multimedia classrooms, campus computer network, cable TV system, and other modern teaching facilities with a total value of 31,990,000 RMB.
Presently, the university has approximately 8,000 full-time undergraduates and vocational students, 473 full-time teachers made up by 143 Professors and Associate Professors as well as 50 foreign teachers from Australia, Canada, Britain, USA, Russia, Japan and the Republic of South Korea.
The university has 7 colleges, namely College of English, College of Oriental Languages, College of Euro-languages, College of Foreignness-oriented Economics and Management, College of International Education, College of Adult Education, and a Foundation College. It covers such foreign languages as English, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Arabic, and offers more than 20 foreign language and foreign-related specialties to over 10,000 students studying on campus.
